About the Artist

The Artist James R. Chisholm

I paint and draw every day – most of the time outdoors, whenever and wherever. Recently I started doing wood sculpture again based on natural themes. I enjoy the experiences that nature provides during the various seasons of the year, and recently installed a show of paintings of mine with that in mind, “Painting experiences in Nature” at North Shore Community College

I live in Salem Massachusetts. I am married, have three children, the youngest now thirty six years old. In my earlier years I attended Northeastern University in Boston, majoring in Industrial Relations, and after graduation my artistic interests renewed. A few years afterwards, I was accepted to and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

I graduated later from Massachusetts College of Art with a Master of Science in Art Education.

My paintings are in the collection of Harvard University’s Grossman Library, North Shore Community College, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts

I have been teaching studio at the college age level since 1973, and teach or have taught; Beginning, Figure, and Technical Drawing; Foundations of Design; Oil and Watercolor Painting; Art History; 20th Century Design History.

I have been teaching drawing, painting and design studio for over 38 years for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Education Department; taught drawing for more than thirty four years for Harvard University Extension at the Boston Museum; and taught drawing, design and painting for about 16 years on and off at Endicott College in Beverly Massachusetts.

I have been teaching art and design at North Shore Community College for 17 years, and
have the rank of Professor of art and design.

In 1984, “American Artist” magazine published an article I wrote on landscape painting, a drawing, was selected in 1977 for an exhibition at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts that celebrated 100 years of graduates and faculty art work, from the Museum’s renowned art school, the Boston Museum School.

I exhibit my work regularly at the Gallery Della Piana in Wenham MA; in colleges, including Harvard University, Massachusetts College of Art, and Endicott College. level since 1973, and teach or have taught; Beginning, Figure, and Technical Drawing; Foundations of Design; Oil and Watercolor Painting; Art History; 20th Century Design History.
